High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

At South West Rocks Public School, our classrooms are dynamic environments where students' learning needs are carefully identified and met through evidence-informed teaching practices designed to challenge and extend them. We provide tailored learning pathways, including enrichment, extension programs, and acceleration, to nurture and develop students' high potential into powerful capabilities.

Our classrooms foster safe and supportive learning environments that promote confidence, risk-taking, perseverance, creativity, and collaboration. We explicitly teach critical thinking and problem-solving strategies, embedding High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) into everyday practice.

Flexible groupings allow students to take lead roles, while feedback is strengths-based, with clear goals and opportunities for self-assessment. Our teachers continuously engage in professional learning to effectively support the diverse needs of all students, ensuring every learner feels a strong sense of belonging and is empowered to reach their full potential.

Across our school

At our school, we identify and support students with high potential by providing targeted enrichment, extension programs, and a variety of extra-curricular opportunities, including debating, competitions, creative arts and sporting opportunities. We recognise that every student is unique, and offer flexible, diverse pathways for them to explore and develop their strengths beyond the classroom, fostering curiosity, creativity, and a love of learning.
